Abstract

Multiplication of Oryzaephilus surinamensis (L.), O. mercator (Fauvel), Tribolium castaneum (Herbst), and T. confusum Jacquelin duVal on 20 natural-product diets was studied in the laboratory. Soybean diets, peanut meal, and cracked black-eyed peas were the most unfavorable diets for these species. A mixture of rolled oats and brewer's yeast and a mixture of cracked wheat, rolled oats, and brewer's yeast were the most favorable diets for O. surinamensis and O. mercator . A mixture of wheat flour, cornmeal, and brewer's yeast was the most favorable diet for T. castaneum and T. confusum . Both species of Oryzaephilus multiplied more on cracked grain than on whole grain or meal. O. surinamensis multiplied more on wheat or rice meal than did O. mercator . O. mercator multiplied more on runner peanuts than did O. surinamensis . T. castaneum and T. confusum multiplied more on meal than on whole or cracked grain. T. confusum multiplied more on rice than did T. castaneum .
