Abstract

Trying to connect atomistic processes with macroscopic measurements is one of the main objectives of plasticity studies. The Orowan’s equation, which describes the rate of plastic flow of crystalline materials, includes two physical quantities: the velocity and the mobile dislocation density. A fundamental understanding of the microscopic deformation mechanisms, which control plastic flow, will therefore be dependent on our ability to model these two relevant quantities.
