Abstract

Using a gradient-coupling model as an effective Lagrangian, the cross section for the emission of arbitrary numbers of soft neutral pions in high-energy scattering processes is obtained in the region $s$, $\ensuremath{-}t$, $\ensuremath{-}u\ensuremath{\gg}{M}^{2}$ as an infrared factor times the corresponding elastic cross section. A formula relating the average number of soft ${\ensuremath{\pi}}^{0}'\mathrm{s}$ to their average total energy is derived, and the possibility is discussed of interpreting large-angle elastic scattering as the shadow of soft-pion emission.
