Abstract

A simple semidestructive residual-stress-measurement technique, particularly suitable for measurement parallel to edges or on outside radii of components, is presented. The nature of the technique obviates reliance upon calibration constants such as have been obtained for the hole-drilling and ring-cutting methods for residual-stress measurement. Use of such calibration constants might seriously underestimate stress values for relatively shallow surface stresses such as may be produced by, for example, grinding or thermochemical treatment.
