Abstract

The transition regime from quasi-static to dynamic shear regime is studied by discrete element method (DEM) and by means of a mesoscopic model. We show that at moderate shear rate multiple shear bands appear which eventually appear as a continuous shear profile for large shear rates. The model and the DEM simulations both show a minimum in the shear stress and a maximum for the number of simultaneous shear bands, however the position of the two do not coincide. The scaling analysis of the kinetic energy indicates that the peak in the latter is the relevant parameter. We also show how the long range order present in the quasi-static regime is gradually destroyed by the presence of multiple shear bands.
