Abstract

2022 started with publication of two research papers that reinforced the necessary role of Epstein-Barr virus infection in the onset of multiple sclerosis. Bjornevik and colleagues1 analysed serum samples in the US Department of Defense serum repository from 801 people with multiple sclerosis and 1566 matched controls, with samples drawn before, during, and after the onset of multiple sclerosis clinical symptoms in the affected individuals. Epstein-Barr virus seropositivity, but not cytomegalovirus seropositivity, preceded multiple sclerosis onset in all patients.
