Abstract

The problem of multiple scattering of light from a slab composed of randomly distributed point scatterers is reformulated by using a density-fluctuation approach. Under the assumption of independent scatterers, the intensity of scattered light averaged over all possible configurations of the scatterers is calculated and compared to the results obtained by other authors. The main advantage of our approach is the clarity with which it reveals the physical basis of the multiple scattering process.
