Abstract

Naphthyl-substituted ortho-carboranes, which were prepared following the reaction between acetylene and decarborane, showed unique multiple photoluminescence behavior associated with intramolecular charge transfer (see picture). On the basis of theoretical calculations, the photoluminescence is shown to originate from the overlap between the naphthyl π orbital and the carboranyl σ orbital.
