Abstract

ABSTRACT Replying to commentaries by Wooldridge and Petrucelli (this issue), I discuss a psychoanalytic approach to treating eating disorders that includes concurrent therapeutic relationships as part of a broadened therapeutic field. I elaborate on the concept of the multidisciplinary treatment team as offering expanded possibilities for working analytically with dissociated aspects of self. Noting that there is more than one way to access a patient’s experience, I contend that the readiness of both the patient and the therapeutic relationship should be considered in deciding when and how to engage with intense feeling states that have the potential to destabilize the patient and disrupt the therapeutic process.
