Abstract

An 11-year-old boy who initially received a DSM-III diagnosis of schizophrenia was found on further evaluation to have multiple personality disorder. Factors important in the differential diagnosis were differentiation of personalities from auditory hallucinations, a history of multiple personality disorder in the mother, and recognition of the special features of the disorder when it occurs in childhood.
