Abstract

Estradiol benzoate (EB) injections were made early in rat estrous cycles, and the effects on follicle development, timing of spontaneous ovulation and corpus luteum development were observed. EB (5-20 μg) injected on diestrus day 1 to 4-day cycling rats advanced the timing of spontaneous ovulation and cyclic changes in secondary sex structures 24 hr, resulting in 3-day cycles. Similar injections to 5-day rats did not advance ovulation but rather appeared to block it. However, EB injections on diestrus day 2 to 5-day rats advanced ovulation 24 hr. Nembutal (31.5 mg/kg) at 1300 the day following EB treatment blocked advanced ovulation; Nembutal at 1800 or later had little effect as did Nembutal at 1300 on the day of EB treatment. Follicle development was suppressed following EB treatment, and ovum counts at ovulation were consistently low in both 4- and 5-day rats. Indications of morphologic luteolysis in corpora lutea formed in the cycle immediately prior to treatment were absent at EB-advanced ovulation. ...
