Abstract

In a recent issue of Diabetes Research and Clinical Practice [l], Derek Gordon et al. published a paper entitled ‘Audit of multiple insulin injection regimens in a large outpatient diabetic population’. They concluded that multiple insulin injection regimens used over prolonged periods of time do not result in any significant change in the metabolic control of a diabetic population. In their opinion, the main advantage is the increased flexibility in daily life. However, more dietary freedom results in excessive weight gain. In the discussion, the authors refer to our preliminary study, published 5 years ago, in which we also concluded that the basal-bolus system with a pen injector offers more freedom and causes weight excess without reducing glycated haemoglobin.
