Abstract
Hepatitis delta virus (HDV) increases risk of cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma in patients with hepatitis B; however, HDV screening rates are low. We assessed providers' perceived barriers to HDV screening and management. We distributed an Internet-based survey to members of 3 gastroenterology/hepatology organizations. Most respondents, 69.3%, correctly identified the appropriate HDV screening test. Several reported barriers to HDV care, including uncertainty of screening criteria, 55.5%, and lack of treatment knowledge, 66.7%. Our findings highlight the need for increased education regarding HDV care. Education should be combined with standardized approaches that increase ease of HDV screening.
