Abstract
This chapter discusses certain specific techniques that are used to allow multiple users simultaneous access to the satellite's transponder. The multiple access techniques that are discussed in the chapter are: (i) frequency division multiple access (FDMA); (ii) time division multiple access (TDMA); (iii) code division multiple access (CDMA); and (iv) space domain multiple access (SDMA). The chapter discusses two common forms of single channel per carrier (SCPC) systems and two common forms of multiple channels per carrier (MCPC) systems. It briefly explains TDMA frame structure, TDMA burst structure and TDMA frame efficiency. Accurate detection of the unique word is of the utmost importance in a TDMA network. The chapter outlines the important mathematical expressions that can be used to compute probabilities of miss detection and false detection. Frame acquisition and synchronization, both during the receive and transmit phases, are vital to proper functioning of a TDMA network.
