Abstract

We present a comparative study of electrically, magnetically and mechanically generated dipoles in a heavily lossy medium in the ULF range. It is shown that in an electrically lossy environment the radiation efficiency of an electrically small antenna is proportional to (ka)3 for an electric radiator and to (ka) for the magnetic radiator. Therefore the magnetic antenna is more efficient than its electric count partner over two orders of magnitude. The proposed small magnetic dipole has potential applications in undersea communication and biomedical treatment.
