Abstract

Particulate fragmentation in jets is used as a model problem to study the issue of size class convergence associated with the multiphase continuum approach to fragmentation modeling. A mixture formulation and highly idealized fragmentation and turbulence models are used. Representative predictions based on both closed form and numerical solutions are presented graphically. It is found to be possible to achieve size class convergence for moderate numbers of size classes under a variety of circumstances, suggesting that the multiphase continuum approach is a practical one.
