Abstract

Usually ridged waveguides, log periodic and tapered slot antennas have been extensively used for EW applications. In this paper, design of a multi-octave band tapered slot Vivaldi antenna (62 mm × 31 mm × 1.6 mm) operating in the frequency band of 6–18 GHz is proposed. Various antenna characteristics such as return loss, VSWR, effective gain and radiation patterns are measured. In addition, the responses of the antenna are studied through parametric study for different values of exponential tapering rate (R), slot width (W3)and cavity diameter (ri). The simulation results show that the VSWR increases at higher value of R resulting in poor performance of the antenna. The simulated value of antenna gain at selected frequencies of 6 GHz, 10 GHz, 12 GHz and 18 GHz are 3.2 dB, 7.3 dB, 7.8 dB and 0.4 dB, respectively. The antenna is fabricated using FR4 substrate and measured results are compared with simulation results. It is shown that the simulated results agree well with the measured results. The antenna is designed using HFSS software and concluding remarks are reported.
