Abstract

Manufacturers lean on trustworthy methods to predict the optimal cutting condition with respect to this fact that some constraint functions must not exceed their critical values because of existing restrictions, due to competition between them for delivering economical and high-quality products in the shortest time to stringent customers. This study presents a modified harmony search (HS) algorithm to determine the optimum cutting parameters leading to simultaneous minimum of two objectives, used tool life and operation time. An application sample is used to illustrate the capability of the modified HS algorithm. Simple HS algorithm and genetic algorithm (GA) are used to solve the same problem for validation purposes. The obtained results demonstrate that the modified HS algorithm is more effective and accurate in approaching global optimum solution compared to simple HS algorithm and GA.
