Abstract

AbstractPopulation increases globally have put considerable strain on transport infrastructure and transport management resulting in large social, environmental and economic costs. Cooperative Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS), based on Information and Communication Technologies (ICT), can help focus on problems associated with traffic management, infrastructure management and security, as well as enhanced driver safety and logistics support for transport operations. It will improve drivers’ commutes, provide better information to city planners, increase the productivity of businesses and raise citizens’ quality of life, reduce congestion, shrink fuel use and cut CO2 emissions. This paper presents a multi-modal Cooperative Intelligent Transport Systems based solution that has been designed as a more efficient and effective approach to prevent and potentially eliminate collisions at rail/road crossings. Large scale field trials of the system at level crossing interfaces have produced promising outcomes is a major step towards improving safety at level crossings.KeywordsIntelligent transport systemsCooperative ITSDSRC
