Abstract

ABSTRACT During the past two years multimedia courseware has been developed at FernUniversität, Hagen to teach basic control theory. Basic control theory is an advanced course of electrical engineering. It includes the description of dynamic systems within the time‐domain and the frequency‐domain, analysis of linear and time‐invariant systems, design of closed loop controllers and stability analysis. The program is a joint development by the respective faculty chair and personnel at the Centre for Distance Study Development (ZFE). The program covers in all about 300 screen pages. It makes extensive use of audio comments to support stepwise presentation of the content. The program is probably the most advanced among German universities with respect to incorporation of all components of multimedia to teach control theory. The simulation tool offers not only an instrument for the student to study and design characteristics of control loops, but is also a valuable instrument for the design and testing of real practical applications. It thereby goes far beyond simple classroom instruction
