Abstract

Conventional social structural theories of military intervention in politics cannot explain the micro-macro problem of military intervention and they cannot explain the dynamics of military intervention either: (1) Coups don’t just happen. Coups are man-made. More exactly, they are made by members of the national elites. Implicitly — because nobody does admit it — all social structural approaches must assume that these social structural conditions in some way or other influence the behavior of national elites. Therefore we introduce the individual into the theory of military interventions in politics. We assume that interactions between the macro and micro level of those political systems that are characterized by military interventions lead to self-organization phenomena which (2) produce different modes of long term behavior of the political systems.
