Abstract
For developing intermittent sand filters more compact laboratory tests were arranged at Suomenoja Wastewater Research Station in Espoo, Finland. The purpose of these experiments was to develop this method to become multilayer. Multilayer means here two or three influent pipe systems in the same filter instead of one. These influents can be used simultaneously. This means that it is possible to increase the BOD-loading of the filter. However effluent quality depends on the BOD-loading of the filter. If BOD-loading is increased, then BOD of the effluent also increases in respect to BOD-load. However higher BOD-loads are more acceptable to multilayer intermittent sand filters than to conventional ones. A suggestion for construction of multilayer intermittent sand filters is presented.
