Abstract

A new quantitative method for the analysis of matrix cracking in 0 m/90 n s carbon-epoxy cross-ply laminates under cyclic loading is suggested on the basis of fractal theory. The main parameters in the multifractal description of non-uniform distributions are discussed. Procedures for application of multifractal formalisms in terms of multifractal spectra f α to characterisations of transverse cracking in laminates are proposed. An invariant character of f α -functions for twin-specimens under the same loading is shown; multifractal spectra can serve as the quantitative characteristic of the set of matrix crack for the given structure (stacking order) and loading history. The ordering character of increase in the number of cycles – transition to the characteristic damage state – on the distribution of cracks is treated in terms multifractal spectra and their shape.
