Abstract

An FEM model is proposed for the generation of Lamb wave using meander-line-coil electromagnetic acoustic transducers (EMATs). We aim to investigate the contribution of dynamic electromagnetic field to generate Lamb wave in EMATs operating on the Lorenz principle. The EMAT model was described by static magnetic field, dynamic electromagnetic field, eddy current, Lorenz force, and displacement. First, the bias magnetic field by permanent magnet was simulated to generate Lamb wave. Secondly, the influence of dynamic electromagnetic field on the excitation process of Lamb wave was discussed in detail. Thirdly, a Lamb wave dispersion curve in frequency-wavenumber domain was plot by using 2D Fourier transform. The simulation and experiment results show that the dynamic magnetic field does not contribute to the excitation of the Lamb wave, and the influence of the dynamic magnetic field can be ignored in the modeling of the EMATs.
