Abstract

Unusual multiferroic phase transitions in intrinsically nonmagnetic ferroelectric PbTiO3 are demonstrated. Misfit strain activates local (anti)ferromagnetism at oxygen vacancies in PbTiO3 via the orbital symmetry breaking and splitting of the defect electronic states. A nonlinear magnetoelectric effect is present due to magnetic phase transitions coincident with ferroelectric polarization switching, providing a new route to magnetoelectric and multiferroic oxides.
