Multidisciplinary training in managing post-thyroidectomy haematoma and front of neck access

Abstract

Background: After local review of two cases of post-thyroidectomy haematoma, we implemented a care pathway to include the recent consensus guidelines of the Difficulty Airway Society, British Association of Otorhinolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery, and British Association of Endocrine and Thyroid Surgeons. We created thyroid emergency boxes which follow the path of the patient from theatre to recovery to the ward and organised two multidisciplinary teaching sessions, providing training in the new guidelines and hands-on practice.
