Abstract

This paper examines the use of multidisciplinary teams (MDTs) in child health care. Systems approaches to health and illness have been influential in the field of pediatric psychology, and imply that collaborative, multidisciplinary work should be valuable, but experience shows that MDTs frequently do not operate smoothly and there is a lack of theory-driven research in this area. It is argued that mainstream social psychology can bring some useful perspectives to bear on this issue. A theory of MDT functioning is proposed which is based on social identity and self-categorisation theories.
