Abstract

In order to optimize the payload mass to launch cost ratio, a successful launch vehicle must address both cost and performance issues. A multidisciplinary design optimization model has been developed to address both cost and performance aspects of a launch vehicle design. Cost estimating relationships relevant for a two stage launch vehicle are instilled. The performance estimating relationships are based on fundamental analytical techniques pertinent to launch vehicle system analysis, using modern historical data. Multiple vehicle design configurations are optimized with respect to performance and cost. Parametric variations of the model are also addressed. Enclosed is a fundamental multidisciplinary design optimization of a two stage liquid propulsion launch vehicle addressing both cost and performance.
