Abstract

Abstract This chapter looks at the role of citizens in accommodating minorities. Two different multicultural virtues are examined: respect and appreciation of difference and tolerance of difference. Despite its initial appeal, respect and appreciation of difference is not as accommodating as tolerance of difference. Tolerance, by focusing on behavior and not attitude, accommodates a much broader range of ways of life than respect and appreciation of difference. Tolerance is also much more neutral toward the different ways of life that exist in contemporary diverse societies.
