Abstract

Multi-channel MAC protocols in wireless ad hoc and sensor networks allow a number of nodes in the same neighborhood to transmit in parallel on distinct channels without interfering with one another. The parallelism increases the throughput and can potentially reduce the delay. Free collision during the data transmission avoids the energy for packet retransmissions. Firstly, we described five important challenges for multi-channel MAC protocols. Secondly, we classified multi-channel MAC protocols in wireless ad hoc networks into four generalized categories and analyzed them respectively. Then, we showed the new challenges of multi-channel MAC protocols in wireless sensor networks and described several existing multi-channel MAC protocols. Finally, we pointed out the open research issues with regard to multi-channel MAC protocols in wireless networks.
