Abstract
A multichamber septic tank is superior to a single-chamber tank. A literature search and a field study were carried out. Performance parameters such as gas baffles, detention period and surface area/depth ratio were found to be significant for both tanks. Septic tank system failures can be reduced by installing efficient septic tanks which do not overload the clogging layer in the seepage bed.
