Abstract

It is shown that an asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) network architecture equipped with connectionless servers at the ATM switches is suitable for switched multimegabit data service (SMDS) support. A multicast tree computation scheme based on the underlying routing procedure is proposed. Two different address handling methods-encapsulation and nonencapsulation-are considered, and their effectiveness in providing multicast service is compared. >
