Abstract

The main purpose of this paper is to present an extensive performance evaluation of a new 5-level switched capacitor topology. The 5-level topology uses two H-bridges connected via a bidirectional voltage blocking switch to produce a 5-level waveform with a voltage boosting gain of two. This paper evaluates two performance parameter of the 5-level inverter, namely the Total Harmonic Distortion (THD) and peak value of fundamental output voltage. The said parameters are calculated for different Multicarrier Pulse Width Modulation techniques (PWM) such Phase Disposition PWM (PD PWM), Phase Opposition Disposition PWM (POD PWM), Alternate Phase Opposition Disposition PWM (APOD PWM) and Phase Shift PWM (PS PWM). All the above modulation technique is employed with three different reference wave to get an extensive evaluation of the new 5-level inverter topology. The different reference wave used are Sinusoidal reference wave, 3rd Harmonic Infused reference wave and a Trapezoidal reference wave. Finally the paper discuss the optimal modulation technique which when employed will result in the most satisfactory operation in terms of the %THD. Also the best possible reference signal that gives the highest DC bus utilization for all modulation technique for a range of Modulation Index (m a ).
