Abstract

A multibeam single parabolic reflector antenna with horns on the focal plane suffers from excessive losses either by spillover or by beam crossover. To avoid the complex, costly and heavy systems currently used to improve the multibeam antenna characteristics as multiple apertures design or enhanced feeds concept, a multifeed and multifrequency EBG antenna is appropriate to illuminate a multibeam single offset parabolic reflector. Indeed, the EBG resonator antenna can achieve directive and interlaced focal feeds in order to obtain maximum reflector antenna efficiency and closely spaced beams. This original property of interlaced radiating apertures is impossible to obtain with horns and is very convenient to improve the reflector antenna performances. A low losses EBG antenna has been realized at 8 GHz to illuminate a focusing antenna with 0.74 F/D ratio. Optimum reflector antenna efficiency of 0.8 and a beams crossover level equal to -3.5 dB have been obtained. The first results of another EBG system at 30 GHz which illuminates a reflector antenna with 2.7 F/D ratio are given.
