Abstract
Two types of simulation models were used to study the multibeam instability in a plasma with a Maxwellian electron velocity distribution. Simulation results obtained are in substantial agreement with linear theory. The large instability growth rates found, γ/ωe≲0.1, suggest that ordered velocity initializations be used with caution in plasma simulation studies.
