Abstract

Multicast communication stands as one of the most interesting and promising research areas. It helped to explore various research opportunities, especially, the ones that deal with the sensitivity to the rate diversity, or the multi-user diversity (MUD). In multicast communication, MUD means that the sender can serve the intended receivers using one or many data transmission rates. The MUD multicast faces many challenges, basically; how many transmissions to accomplish and which data rates to use in order to ensure a specific performance level. In this paper, we conduct a survey on existing one-hop and multi-hop wireless multi-rate multicast. With reference to existing works, we discuss the challenges introduced below, we identify the main issues of MUD multicast and we present the solutions proposed so far.
