Abstract

Using methods of structural investigations we found in metallic materials a new state induced by irradiation. The state is observed within narrow ranges of irradiation parameters and has universal features in all the metallic alloys studied, namely, ion irradiated Fe-Ni, Fe-Cr-Ni, Ni-Cr, Cu-Ni, Fe-Cr solid solutions and commercial alloys. The features of the new state are heterogeneity which develops from the initial single phase, the cell structure and a nonmonotonic dependence on the defect creation rate. The appearance of the new state is accompanied by a significant or even an anomalously large change of microhardness of the materials.
