Abstract
Abstract The effects of mulching, with black plastic, paper, and hay on water, Shumard, Nuttall, and cherrybark oak were studied in a plantation established in a typical small landowner planting. The study was designed to determine if selected oak seedlings could be planted and compete successfully against herbaceous and wild seedling competition when mulches were used. Mulch effects on growth were positive with each mulch type on each species. In cherrybark and Shumard oak, the treatment effects for height, diameter, and aboveground seedling volume were significant (P < 0.05). Plastic and/or hay mulch improved water oak and Shumard oak early development. Paper and/or hay improved the development of cherrybark, and plastic and/or hay improved the early development of Nuttall. In all growth variables, the untreated control and herbicide treatments were the poorest. South. J. Appl. For. 21(1):44-46.
