Abstract
This article aboard two fundamental topics for Poverty and Assistance History studies: the role of the woman and families. The context of the study is Orizaba, an industrial town in Mexico in nineteenth-century and early xx. In the case of the women, they had an important participation in charitable system, like donors, workers and petitioners. Many of health institutions and charitable programs were formed by rich and poor women since different levels of social participation. They also went through the procedure for intern her familiars or themselves in hospitals, orphanages and asylums for obtained protection, health services, food and education. This role was determinant for the survival family strategies in a hard economic and social context.
