Abstract

Significance This is the second time in 17 years the ruling United Socialist Party of Venezuela (PSUV) has been defeated at the ballot box and the first time that it has lost control of the legislature. President Nicolas Maduro quickly conceded defeat following Sunday's election, and Venezuela has remained calm in contrast to the disorder and protest that marked the April 2013 presidential contest. Turnout was 74%, up from 66% in the last legislative election. Impacts The MUD opposition will be forced to define a policy agenda and priorities for the Assembly. Recent elections in Argentina and Venezuela will embolden the political right in the region. Brazil may see a ripple effect, possibly putting increased pressure on President Dilma Rousseff. Regional neighbours and Washington will push for dialogue and compromise during this transition from Chavista hegemony.
