Abstract

FILLING DEFECTS in the ureters may be due to several causes, such as pyeloure-teritis cystica, papillomas, gas bubbles, small blood clots, or calculi. Thickening of the mucosa with nodularity can occur with subserosal infiltration from renal carcinoma. Granulomas are typically produced by tuberculosis. Occasionally, dilated ureteral vessels may produce indentations. Edema of the bladder mucosa is often seen in association with urinary infection, but it is not often recognized in the ureter except perhaps at the lower end where it may lead to vesicoureteral reflux. Infections of the urinary tract, especially those due to B. coli, may give rise to such protean manifestations as gas pyelograms, gas-containing abscesses, cystitis emphy-sematosa, renal scarring, and periureteral fibrosis (5). In the three cases described below, there was marked mucosal edema of the renal pelvis and ureter, probably with associated ulceration in two instances. This gave rise to severe hematuria and a temporarily nonfunctioning ...
