Abstract

The pruritus of cholestasis is a maddening symptom of liver disease. The etiology of the pruritus of cholestasis is likely to be multifactorial. Genetic studies to identify susceptibility to pruritus, the development of a non-human primate animal model of scratching behavior, and the establishment of the multiorgan physiomimetic model are part of a research pathway in this complex complication of liver disease.
