Abstract

In this paper, a comparative study and analysis of two different maximum torque per ampere (MTPA) speed control approaches is laid out for interior permanent magnet synchronous machine (IPMSM) drives. The well-known classical field-oriented vector control (FOC) MTPA is compared with another modified, yet simpler MTPA approach. The presented comparison investigates the performance of the IPMSM under various operating ranges. Moreover, different load conditions are used to show the major differences between both control methods. A nonlinear friction model is also included to have a better representation for the system dynamics. Simulation results demonstrate at which conditions the simpler MTPA scheme is a good candidate to replace the classical MTPA control for low-cost implementation of the drive while maintaining the high efficiency performance of IPMSMs under MTPA control.
