Abstract

In the present article, I am interested in analyzing the encounters between French Muslims and Franco-French in contemporary France such as depicted in popular ethnic comedies. I will focus on the TV series Aïcha (Yamina Benguigui, 2009, 2011, 2012) and the comedy L’Italien (Olivier Baroux, 2010). These films received unexpected popular acclaim in France and abroad. I will center my attention on what could have triggered the success of these films despite the fact that they openly talk about an Islam of France as well as of the relationship between Muslims and French-born citizens. The films testify about the place that Islam occupies in the social and cultural life in contemporary France while reinforcing the complex identity of young French individuals with diverse origins in France. I argue that the connection between the two cultures and religions is possible through the cultural métissage of Franco-French and Franco-Maghrebi youth in France.
