Abstract

BackgroundWe evaluated the association between MTHFR C677T polymorphism and the risk for meningioma in an interethnic population in Brazil, then conducted a meta-analysis if MTHFR C677T polymorphism could contribute to the risk of meningioma. Materials and methodsTwenty-three patients with meningioma and 96 control individuals were genotyped for the MTHFR C677T polymorphism using PCR and direct sequencing. Electronic databases were searched for eligible case-control studies. ORs with 95% CIs were used to assess the strength of the association between MTHFR C677T polymorphism and meningioma. ResultsThe genotypes and alleles were not significantly different between the patient and control groups of the Pará population. Our meta-analysis included a total of 1928 cases and 2292 controls. We found no association between the MTHFR C677T polymorphism and the risk of meningioma under five tested genetic models. ConclusionMTHFR C677T polymorphism was not associated with meningioma risk in our study. Studies with emphasis on ethnicity are relevant to have a better picture of MTHFR polymorphism association with some cancers.
