Abstract

Mössbauer spectra of 57 Fe in a single-crystal YbFe 2 O 4 , an antiferromagnetic Ising spin system on a triangular lattice, were measured below the Neel temperature, T N . Outermost groups of absorption spectra, those due to Fe ions in a 3+-like state, were investigated extensively as a function of the external magnetic field during measurement ( H meas ) as well as that during cooling ( H cool ) of the specimen through T N . It is concluded that there are three kinds of Fe [3+] ions of equal number, the spins of two of which are parallel to each other and antiparallel to the other. The effective field at the nuclei of the majority Fe [3+] spin is increased by H meas . Formation of short-range ordering of Fe ions with different valences is suggested, though the details are not clear at present.
