Abstract

Precipitates in rapidly solidified Al-5Fe, Al-5Fe-1Ni and Al-5Fe-2Ni (in at. %) alloys have been investigated by Mossbauer spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction. The results show that in ternary alloys the formation of Al-Fe compounds is restrained while the ternary intermetallic compound τ phase (Al 9 Co 2 -type structure) is formed. The Mossbauer spectrum of the τ phase has been obtained to be a quadrupole doublet with the parameters : Isomer shift IS = 0.12 mm/s, quadrupole split QS = 0.32 mm/s and full-line width Γ = 0.26 mm/s. It has been deduced through analysis of experimental data that the atomic ratio of Fe to Ni in the τ phase can change notably during heat treatments although its lattice and Mossbauer parameters remain unchanged. The chemical composition of the τ phase in the studied alloys can be written as Al 9 Fe x Ni 2-x Ni (1 ≤ x ≤ 1.6).
