Abstract

The Mössbauer spectra of Ti films evaporated on Fe substrates (Ti/Fe) and on Ti substrates (Fe/Ti) were measured after heat treatment following the evaporation. The spectra were composed of a singlet, a doublet and the familiar bcc-Fe sextet. The singlet was found to be due to crystalline FeTi, whereas the doublet is attributed to crystalline Fe2Ti in both Ti/Fe and Fe/Ti films annealed at 1000°C and 700∼1000°C. However, in the Ti/Fe films annealed at 700°C, the doublet is ascribed to amorphous FexTi1-x. The relative amounts of FeTi and Fe2Ti suggest that Fe atoms diffuse into the Ti substrates in the Fe/Ti films, while Ti atoms diffuse into the Fe substrates in the Ti/Fe films during annealing.
