Abstract

The reduction of FeCl 3 graphite intercalation compounds by heavy alkali metal vapour was studied using Mössbauer spectroscopy in order to identify the reduced phases and the influence of the reaction duration and temperature. Intercalated iron as well as small α iron clusters were obtained. The results can be explained if a diffusion mechanism of the iron atoms is considered.
