Abstract

AbstractThe dispersed state of iron ions in LiF and NaF is studied by absorber Mössbauer spectroscopy for the first time. Crystals containing low concentrations of Fe57 and quenched from high temperatures show spectra consisting of symmetric quadrupole split doublets indicative of iron ions in a divalent charge state. The absorber spectra show marked differences with the corresponding source spectra of LiF:Co57 and NaF: Co57. Aftereffects of the decay of Co57 are believed to be responsible for the difference in source and absorber spectra.
